Samsung has finally unveiled its latest flagship smartphones in the ‘Galaxy series’ at an event in New York. They are the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+. Both of them boasts of Infinity Quad HD+ Display, which is an end-to-end, bezel-less screen. They come in Midnight Black, Coral Blue, Orchid Gray, Arctic Silver and Maple Gold colors.
Samsung has done away with the traditional hardware home button and thus the S8 and S8+ come with on-screen buttons that offer haptic feedback. There is both Iris Scanner along with Face Recognition and Fingerprint Scanner. Samsung has also introduced a new Smart Assistant named Bixby, which will offer personalized experience to improve the way people interact with their phones. According to Samsung, it is not only a voice assistant but an intuitive and comprehensive interface which will leverage contextual awareness to learn users’ habits and then respond accordingly. The Samsung Galaxy S8+ and S8 rock 6.2-inch and 5.8-inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity displays, respectively. Both of them are always-on displays with a resolution of 2960 x 1440 pixels and are also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The S8+ has a pixel density of 529 PPI and a screen-to-body ratio of 84%, while the S8 has a pixel density of 570 PPI and a screen-to-body ratio of 83.6%. These flagship smartphones are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 octa-core processor with Adreno 540 GPU or Exynos 8895 octa-core processor with Mali-G71 MP20 GPU (depending on region). There are two variants based on RAM and storage - the base model has 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage, while the high-end model has 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. The user can extend the memory up to 256GB by inserting a microSD card.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ run on the latest TouchWiz UI based on Android 7.0 Nougat OS. In the camera department, both of them feature a 12 megapixel Dual Pixel primary rear camera along with f/1.7 aperture, LED flash, OIS and 4K video recording with VDIS. It comes with shooting modes such as Pro, Panorama, Slow motion, Hyperlapse, Food mode and the images can be saved as RAW files as well. There is a 8 megapixel secondary selfie camera with f/1.7 aperture, which is capable of clicking wide-angle selfies. The S8 and S8+ come in both Single and Dual SIM variants depending on region. The Indian variant will get a Hybrid Dual SIM (nano + nano/microSD card) option. They are also water and dust resistant (IP68 certified).
The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ come with a lot of sensors including Accelerometer, Barometer, Fingerprint Sensor, Gyro Sensor, Geomagnetic Sensor, Hall Sensor, Heart Rate Sensor, Proximity Sensor, RGB Light Sensor, Iris Sensor and Pressure Sensor. In the connectivity department, they include 4G VoLTE, 3G HSPA+, Bluetooth 5.0 LE, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (Dual Band) MU-MIMO, USB Type-C, GPS with GLONASS, NFC and ANT+. Under the hood, the S8 packs in a 3000mAh battery while the S8+ boasts of a 3500mAh battery. Both of them support fast charging via both wired and wireless (WPC and PMA) charging. The S8 offers a talk time of 20 hours while the S8+ offers a talk time of 24 hours. The Galaxy S8 is 8.0mm thick and weighs 152 grams while the Galaxy S8+ is 8.1mm thick and weighs 173 grams.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 is priced at $750 (Rs. 48,655 approx.) and the Galaxy S8+ is priced at $850 (Rs. 55,084 approx.). Both of them also come with AKG earphones by Harman worth $99 (Rs.6,416 approx.). They will go on sale from April 21 but pre-orders available from March 30.
Samsung has also launched a new Gear 360 camera with new design and 4K video recording capability. There is a new Gear VR along with controller, priced at $129. The company has also announced Samsung DeX dock for both Galaxy S8 and S8+, which will provide an Android-based desktop-like experience.
