BlackBerry makes a comeback with KEYone, a smartphone with QWERTY keyboard

BlackBerry currently might have a 0.0% market share globally but the company is looking to make a comeback. BlackBerry KEYone, a smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard has been launched at the MWC 2017 event in Barcelona couple of days back. The phone has been designed by BlackBerry but it was manufactured by TCL Communication Technology (TCT).

The BlackBerry KEYone priced at $549 / €599 / £499 will go on sale globally starting from April in Black color. The main USP of this phone is its 4-row QWERTY backlit keyboard, which features touch gesture keys and flick typing support. It also has up to 52 customizable shortcuts. The KEYone boasts of a 4.5-inch 3:2 display, which has a pixel density of 433 PPI and a resolution of 1620 x 1080 pixels. The phone is being powered by a Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor clocked at 2.0GHz along with Adreno 506 GPU.

For multitasking and storage, there is 3GB RAM and 32GB internal memory. The storage can be expanded externally up to 2TB by adding a microSD card. It is a 4G LTE enabled phone which also supports Bluetooth 4.2 LE, GPS, GLONASS, NFC, USB 3.1 Type-C, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (Dual Band) and 3G HSPA+. Under the hood of the KEYone, we find a 3505mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support. According to the company, it will get charged from 0-50% in just 36 minutes. It runs on Android 7.1 Nougat OS, which is mostly stock Android but the user will also get security and productivity suite from BlackBerry.

In the camera department, there is a 12 megapixel primary camera with dual-tone LED flash, Sony IMX378 sensor, PDAF and f/2.0 aperture at the back. It has a pixel size of 1.55µm and can record 4K videos. We also get a 8 megapixel selfie camera with pixel size of 1.12µm and f/2.2 aperture. It supports Single SIM and the fingerprint sensor of the KEYone is embedded into the space bar key. The phone is made up of anodized aluminium frame but has a soft touch textured cover at the back.

If priced around Rs. 40,000 in India, it might make its way on our best smartphones under 40000 list.
